Northern Lights Technique

This really is a fun, easy technique. All you need is some ink pads Whisper White cardstock, a sponge wedge, and a white gel pen. Just so you know, I've never actually seen the northern lights. I just looked at pictures and used some imagination. In a lot of pictures I've seen the lights appear to be vertical swooshes in the sky.

The first one I made was done like this and I used Smoky Slate, Blackberry Bliss, and Night of Navy ink pads. You ink up your sponge and begin off the page, then move onto the paper. Use the lightest color first, then progress to the darkest color. I used a circle punch to make a mask from a piece of sticky note paper. I simply placed it on my paper before I began sponging on color. When finished and the mask is removed, you have a lovely bright moon. Stampin' Up! sponges come in a package of three for $4.00. I cut them each into 6 pie shaped wedges.

On the card below, I used Smoky Slate, Blackberry Bliss, Crushed Curry, and Night of Navy ink pads with Balmy Blue cardstock.

This card is my favorite! I used Pacific Point, Smoky Slate and Night of Navy inkpads with Rich Razzleberry cardstock. The mountains in the back are diecut from Basic Black cardstock, and those in the foreground were stamped in Versamark on Shimmery White cardstock and embossed in white. Then I used an Aqua Painter to add color.

Mountain Air Is Calling My Name

I have three cards to show you today. The first one is my favorite!! It's a different version of a card I did recently where I cased  (copy and share everything)  a card from the catalog. This time I changed it up a bit, by adding Mossy Meadow frames, using a diecut tree, and stamping the tree line then brayering grass. The sponge brayer works so well for this as it leaves a texture and a more consistant coloring than if using a sponge dauber.

First I brayered some Seaside Spray ink at the top of my cardstock for the sky. For the mountains, I used the re ersible side of the satmp and stampedof Highland Heather twice for the mountains furthest away. Then I stamped off Highland Heather once for the next set of mountains. The last line of mountains was Night of Navy stamped off once. The interesting thing I found when stamping off a solid stamp onto printer paper, was that the stamp picked up the texture from the paper. I didn't really like that, so I used Whisper White cardstock to stamp off of. It is sooooo smooth, and leaves no texture. I also found that I liked using my Stampin' Pierce Mat for the stamping off. You have to be sure to stamp lightly, or you will get 'lines' from the edge of the stamp pad on your stamp... and you don't want mountains with ink lines in them lol.

For the foreground mountains, I flipped the stamp over to the detailed side and stamped in Night of Navy ink. Iw wanted to diecut this mountain line, but not the bottom because I wanted to stamp the tree line. So, I simply layed the die on the mountains, and puled the bottom of the paper out in front of the die so that it only cut the top of the mountains.

Next I stamped the treeline in Mossy Meadow ink beginning at the base of the mountains. I used my sponge brayer again to add Mossy Meadow grass in the foreground. Then I adhered this to the layer of solid mountains and trimmed the bottom a bit to fit.

Mountain Air

The Mountain Air bundle is perfect for those who like to build scenes. It's become quite a trend lately, and these reversable stamps make it much easier. In a previous post, I included some step by step photos showing how to use the reversable stamps and a video. You can see that here if you missed it: http://scmagnolia.blogspot.com/2020/01/mountain-air-bundle.html

Below are posters showing the elements included in the bundle and how they work together to build scenes.
Most are done left to read as normal when reading, but a couple a backwards due to a morning without coffee.

Watercolor Stamping Technique
  • First, cut a layer of watercolor paper and spritz it with water, or use an Aqua Painter to apply water.
  • Stamp the solid side of the mountains stamp with Balmy Blue ink (stamp off once 1st), the mountains again with Night of Navy (stamp off once 1st)
  • stamp the row of trees twice with Night of Navy ink (full strength.) The ink will bleed, which is the effect you want in watercolor. You may want to have some paper towels nearby to mop up the water and remove too much color.
  • While the paper was still damp, hand watercolor the sky using Lovely Lipstick, Terracotta Tile, and Grapefruit Grove ink with an Aqua Painter. Just “stamp” a small clear block in the ink and paint with Aqua Painter from that palette. You can also use an Aqua Painter to add some Balmy Blue ink to the lake portion on the bottom.
  • After the paper is fairly dry, stamp the detailed side of the stamps with both Balmy Blue and Night of Navy ink. You can use the Aqua Painter to soften the details and add brush strokes as you like.
  • When the paper is thoroughly dry, use an Embossing Buddy to remove the static, stamp over mountains in VersaMark and emboss in white.
  • Cut the larger trees out of watercolor paper first, then use an Aqua Painter to watercolor them with Night of Navy ink.
  • For the smaller tree and row of trees, spritz the watercolor paper, then stamp with the solid side (stamp off once 1st). When the paper is dry, stamp with the detail side. Then use the coordinating dies to cut them out.
  • Heat emboss the sentiment in white on Night of Navy Cardstock, cut out with Classic Label Punch, and finish off with a bit of Braided Linen Trim.
So grateful to fellow Demo, Tami Hewlett, whose design really helped me get my creative juices flowing. These techniques, of watercoloring with ink and Aqua Painter, stamping off, etc. are things many of us know to do. Pulling them out of your bag of tricks to use in building scenes with Mountain Air will be a blast! Use different colors, combos of stamps etc and create something entirely different.
